Summertime in Maine means a whole slew of celebrations all across the state, and an awful lot of great al fresco-style feasting! As you’d only expect from our name here at SummerMaine, our vacation rentals position you perfectly to partake of these seasonal festivals and fairs, including the following three absolute winners—each of which has proven its staying power, to say the least.
Bangor State Fair
The Bangor State Fair isn’t a spring chicken, if you will: The first iteration launched back in 1849, if not before. As many as 50,000 flock to its 10-day lineup of attractions at Bass Park: everything from oxen and tractor pulls to demolition derbies, draft horse shows, and the diverse menagerie of Animal Alley. The fair’s midway is certainly not lacking in rides, games, and live entertainment—plus a great deal of irresistible fairground fare. Here at SummerMaine, we put you within easy reach of the 2018 Bangor State Fair, grooving along from July 27th through August 5th.
Maine Lobster Festival
It’s the 71st running of Rockland’s Maine Lobster Festival—that’s right, the 71st, a testament to the strong community spirit behind this bash, and the perennial appeal of fresh Maine lobster. This year’s festival runs August 1st through August 5th at Harbor Park, nice and close to a number of our vacation rentals. On tap at the proceedings? Try some 20,000 pounds of the crustacean in question destined for a whopper of a cooker: turned into such delicacies as lobster rolls, lobster bisque, lobster won-tons, lobster mac ‘n cheese, lobster stuffed risotto balls, and more. (There’s also a heapful of other gastronomic delights on order at the Maine Lobster Festival, from fried and steamed clams to shrimp, scallops, and a pancake breakfast.) The goings-on also include the Maine Sea Goddess Pageant & Coronation on Wednesday the 1st, the Steins & Vines wine and craft-beer tasting on Thursday the 2nd, the Seafood Cooking Contest on Friday the 3rd, the Big Parade along Main Street on Saturday the 4th, and the always-thrilling Great International Lobster Crate Race on Sunday the 5th.
Here’s another amazingly venerable Maine summer festival: The Union Fair has been going down since 1869 (save for a couple years during World War II), and its charms haven’t dimmed a bit—or changed all that much. Those charms include horse and tractor pulls, pig scrambles, 4-H shows, pie-eating contests, demolition derbies, live music, juggling, midway games and rides, and lawnmower drag racing—plus the varied pleasures of the Maine Wild Blueberry Festival going on during the fair, from looks at berry-harvesting equipment and a genuine berry patch to the crowning of the Maine Wild Blueberry Queen and free dessert giveaways. Throw in a wine and beer garden, not to mention the fascinating historical exhibits of the Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage at the fairgrounds, and you’ve got a mighty good time in store! This year’s Union Fair takes place August 18th through the 25th at the fairgrounds in Union, Maine—another easy reach from SummerMaine rentals!
