What’s the most beautiful season in Midcoast Maine? Well, each and every one of them has its own distinct loveliness—this is one of the prettiest corners of New England, after all. But more than a few people, residents and visitors alike, swear by autumn: which, after all, expresses itself in truly world-class fashion in this neck of the “woods.”
We’re referring, of course, to the mesmerizing color show that takes over the Midcoast’s forests each and every fall. And our Summer Maine vacation rentals give you front-row seats to the local fall-foliage show, which attracts “leaf-peepers” from all over the globe.
Fall Foliage in Midcoast Maine
The shortening of days and gradual stepping-down of night temperatures coincide with that brilliant blaze of glory in which our maples, birches, aspens, cherries, and other hardwood trees (and shrubs) go out for the year ahead of winter’s hibernation mode. Midcoast woods, hedgerows, and in-town street trees become a polychromatic mosaic of reds, oranges, yellows, bronzes, and purples: a botanical palette which varies in magnitude and exact timing from year to year, but which always impresses.
In our stretch of coastal Maine, fall colors tend to peak in the second half of October, though there’s always something of a leadup and then a fading-out, so you’ve usually got a broad window for leaf-peeping of some degree or another.
Midcoast Hotspots for Fall Color
Given out bountiful canopies, it’s not hard to find postcard-perfect fall colors in Midcoast Maine. But there are some particularly rewarding leaf-peeping destinations as well, many of them just a hop, skip, and a jump from Summer Maine properties.
One of the finest is definitely Camden Hills State Park, the multiple summits of which—including Mount Battle and Mount Megunticook, the latter the high point of the Camden Hills—provide superb coastal fall-foliage panoramas.
More stunning views await atop Bradbury Mountain, centerpiece of its own eponymous state park. Besides the colorful vistas, visiting the summit this time of year offers the chance to spot hawks, eagles, and other raptors winging along on their southbound migration.
