We may be on the biased side of things, but we don’t think there’s a better place to be in the fall than Maine. (If you pressed us, we’d also say the same about spring, summer, and winter, but there you have it.) And besides leaf-peeping amid our glorious, world-class-caliber fall colors, it doesn’t get much more autumn-tastic than a leisurely afternoon at a u-pick apple orchard.
Calling one of our Midcoast vacation properties here at SummerMaine home this fall, you’ve got a number of outstanding orchards at your ready disposal. Allow us to introduce them!
Hope Orchards (434 Camden Rd, Hope, ME)
Run by Brien and Emily Davis since 2001, Hope Orchards delivers pastoral beauty and superb apple diversity in equal measure. The acreage grows a wealth of different varieties, among them McIntosh, Shenandoah, Honey Crisp, Black Oxford, Macoun, Cortland, and Cox’s Orange Pippin. Hope Orchards is open for u-picking Wednesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM through October; in November, you can swing by on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 AM to 4 PM.
Sewall Organic Orchard (259 Masalin Rd, Lincolnshire, ME)
Maine’s oldest operating organic orchard, Sewall is a fabulous place to pick not only for its unique spread of apple varieties—Prima, Priscilla, Golden Delicious, and Jonagolds—but also for the long and glorious views to the Camden Hills and the highlands of western Maine from the flanks of Levenseller Mountain. Come gather from the bounty Friday through Sunday, 9:30 AM to 4 PM.
Hardy Farms (106 Church St., Hope, ME)
From Cortland, Macoun, and Spencer to McIntosh, Granny Smith, and Spy, Hardy Farms has its own delicious lineup of fruit ripe for the picking this time of year. Its u-pick experience is available Thursday through Sunday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
