We’re going to suggest with as much humbleness as we can muster that Maine makes the perfect destination for summer vacations. From outdoor adventures along a spectacular Atlantic coast, down grand rivers, and up in moose-rich highland forests to amusement parks, museums, zoos, and other fun destinations, it’s little surprise how our great big New England state earned the nickname “Vacationland.”
Set up in one of our vacation rentals in Maine’s outstanding Midcoast, you’ve got no end of family-friendly options at your fingertips during the gorgeous and sunshiny summer stretch. Here’s a mere sample of destinations and events you and the entire crew can enjoy!
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens
A floral beauty-scape awaits you at this ravishing public garden occupying nearly 300 acres of tidewater shore in Boothbay. Among the varied plantings you’ll find an especially family-oriented wonderland in the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden, the design of which comes inspired by the stories and worlds of some classic children’s books penned by Maine writers: from Robert McCloskey’s Blueberries for Sal to Chris Van Dusen’s Down to the Sea With Mr. Magee. The layout includes a Learning Garden rich in kid’s activities and well attended by varied pollinators.
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM in August; it closes an hour earlier in September and October, at the end of which it shuts down for the season.
Camden Harbor Park & Amphitheatre
This event space alongside the Camden Public Library is quite the happening place all summer long, what with its slew of movies, concerts, theater, and other entertainments. Monday big-screen flicks still on tap for the season include The Dark Crystal (with its unforgettable Jim Henson creations) on August 6th, the evocative bayou-set Beasts of the Southern Wild on August 13th, and the Academy Award-nominated stop-motion hit The Boxtrolls on August 20th.
You’ve got musical performances aplenty at the Amphitheatre in the coming weeks as well, including the Daymark Irish Trio on Thursday, August 16th, Quantum: Electronica on Sunday, August 19th, and the Day Winds North Wind Ensemble on Sunday, August 26th.
Camden Windjammer Festival
Camden’s history, of course, is inextricably bound with the sea, and the city was long a great center of shipbuilding. At the Windjammer Festival over Labor Day Weekend, you can celebrate that maritime heritage and the sheer elegance of sail-powered crafts, which have pretty darn sturdy all-ages appeal. The festival includes a whole slew (or “sloop,” perhaps?) of sailing vessels on display as well as a flurry of entertainment, from boat races and parades to chowder contests, fireworks, and the always-popular schooner crew talent show.
Come join us at a Summer Maine rental property on the Midcoast, and soak up all that summer in our sublime neck of the woods has to offer in the family-vacation department!
